TED Talk for Teens – The InnerKid Philosophy

We love TED Talks—how could we not? They are FREE ways to learn amazing ideas and concepts that help to save the world.  We have shared a couple of our favorites with you, and will probably share a couple more.  But this TED Talk is part of their TEDxTeen series.

In this amazing TED Talk, teenager Kristen Powers shares her InnerKid Philosophy that has shaped her life.  At age 9, her mom was diagnosed with a debilitating and eventually fatal disease called Huntington’s Disease.  By age 12, her mother had to be in a nursing home and had lost complete control of her mental and physical faculties.  This disease is so dominant in the gene pool, Kristen and her two younger brothers have a 50% chance of having the disease.

So has she crumpled into a depressed and hopeless heap? NO! She started writing and by age 11, she devised the InnerKid Philosophy.  Here are some of the salient points of her philosophy:

  1. She is harnessing her inner kid for the rest of her life, and applying it to adulthood.
  2. She created the Green Tiger Campaign, which focuses on food, music and dancing, and fun with friends. She even got to meet Steven Colbert!
  3. Kristen is making a documentary about the genetic testing process she will undergo now that she is 18, where she will find out if she has Huntington’s Disease.

How can you not be inspired?  So keep harnessing that Inner Kid, that part of you that yearns to be yourself regardless of what others think.  Make every day your own.
